  • 25:50 I have always hated the idea of "American Exceptionalism". It is the most stupid idea that any American ever came up with. Even though most countries in the OECD outdo the United States in every category that matters, many Americans still feel that the United States is the greatest country in the world, which it is most plainly not. Lots of America sucks, and yet Americans seem to believe that even though it sucks, it is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of the world even though it isn't.

  • Public education is a good start, but what about those "Mericuns" that hate anyone who doesn't agree with their inbred-hating-everything-they-ain't way of thinking? The problems starts at home, and I cannot think of a non-draconian way of dealing with that.

  • Pepple learning real history do not hate their country. They learn that things can get better, but can also get worse. So they feel responsible for how things get. But changing how to learn it will probably put a wedge between those learning and believing the lie, and those who learned the truth..especially if the elder generation fights progress...

  • I had learned about Tulsa from a sociology professor in college. He was this big football player that was in his early thirties. One day a classmate said that she as a woman had a harder time day to day than the average black man. Mind you his class was almost all discussion. Students would talk and debate almost the whole class and we ended up learning better that way. However, when he heard this he decided to change the class to a history lesson. The student said that this was in the past but she was sexually assaulted and has to deal with men on a daily basis. Thats when we found out about this guys life experiences as well and by time he finished this classmate of mine had gotten up and left and never returned. One of the best classes ever. He brought in real Tennessee BBQ that he made since we were a small enough class. Really opened my eyes to multiple views. He wasn't trying to necessarily prove her totally wrong but I think he was just trying to open her eyes to some things her pain had allowed her to ignore. We all have pain but now it's more important than ever that we make sure everybody is taken care of and educated. We all need to stand together against misinformation.

  • No one teaches slavery correctly, instead opting for the racist path and just saying "Caucasian bad", when in fact it was not Caucasians who started slavery, every nation and breed under the sun has had slaves, slavery has NEVER been about race, Caucasians were and still are enslaved in parts of Africa and finally, that Caucasians actually ended it.

    • @Jabroni You can be honest and learn history or you can be a hypocrite. Your choice.

      MCPunk55MCPunk553 giorni fa
    • how does that mean racism is not still a key factor here? the key idea that keeps people from abolishing slavery is the idea that the people being ensalved, by nature of who they are, are lesser humans compared to the ones owning them as slaves. there are many reasons an enslaved group is viewed as inferior to the slavers, but by far the most common is because of physical difference, I.E. Race. you are incorrectly conflating the reason why people own slaves (generally monetary reasons) to the reason people justified making slaves of that group of people (generally race reasons). theres a reason the US brought slaves across an entire ocean instead of just enslaving their white neighbors, and race is one of largest aspects of that. honestly, this is really basic and obvious stuff, are you being intentionally ignorant?

However, a lot of slaves couldn't leave because they had no money or means so they became sharecroppers "glorified" slaves really.

    • because its something that is well known and a bit of tangent? the values of democrats back then are the core values of conservatism today. small government, anti immigration, and the supression of black voting rights. before hitler siezed all power, his party was called the "national socialist German workers party". then it become the nazi party and actually encouraged a free market (inside of nazi occupied territory) which is capitalism not socialism. the point being is that groups, and what the represent, change over time. its actually really telling you bring this up. it illustrates your bias, that youre not looking at the details and nuance of our history and instead are looking any "the democrats are evil" evidence that you can find (detatching it from any relevent context needed to understand its greater impacts and meanings)

In 2010 there was a memorial park established in Tulsa. So yes, the way history is taught needs to be changed. The question is how? Personally, I think there should be a full context of the horrors of it, but taught at an age when children can process it.

  • Why are we held responsible for slavery when people from over a century ago are the ones responsible.

    Kaeden CooperKaeden Cooper11 giorni fa
    • we need to address the systemic issues that our ancestors put in place. and frankly, one of our political parties STILL enforces laws that promote these systemic injustices. just look at the very real and concerted effort to reduce the ability for those in cities to easily vote (1 ballot box for the entire area of Houston). the fact that on average a black person waits several hours to vote while white people, like myself, average under an hour to cast that same vote. finally lets look the rhetoric and "evidence" used by trump and the GOP after his november 2020 loss. trump and Co. made a concerted effort to throw out votes, namely those in prodominently black communities around the inner cities. these, in trumps words, were "areas filled with criminals and corruption" with many of the votes cast in those areas being "illegal". his is talking specifcally about black citizens and their votes. this rhetoric specifically targeted black communities and made the proclomation that they are criminals and their votes illegal. it is actually one of the most blatant display of modern racism i have personally witnessed. all of these lies led to a reall insurrection on jan 6th, less than 2 months ago....... the problem is still here and needs to be addressed.... also, no one is demanding the punishment of the average white american in order to recitfy the past. In reality, the furtherest anyone is discussing this issue is talking about reperations for those damaged by our history. this is only elevating others to a point where they already shouldve been, it in no way punishes anyone.

I get that he wants his children to grow up proud of who they are and be inspired to do great things. But blindly believing that the US is the best at everything will have the opposite effect that he desires. If a kid grows up hearing about how wonderful and flawless they and their country are, why should they strive to improve anything, since they're already allegedly the best? All that kind of attitude will bring is misplaced, inflated egos and complacency.
